“All Trees of Wood Shout for Joy” is a sculptural work that explores our complicated and tenuous relationship to the natural world. This piece investigates my perception, memory and experience of walking in the forest. The wood that was selected was in a state of transition and had been exposed to time, weather, insects and animals. I have collected the wood to preserve it– to hold on to some semblance of its former vibrant self and try to prevent its ultimate demise. As viewers move through the space around my work, they can perceive it as a physical and visual experience. Tactile qualities, whether they are repulsive or sensuous, are important. I need to preserve a sense of touch with nature. I want people to reconnect with our natural world before it is irretrievably gone.
